Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Leading provider of value-creating plastics solutions, Borealis AG (Vienna, Austria), has announced the commissioning of a third gas-phase reactor at the company's Borstar polypropylene plant in Schwechat, Austria. Borealis has made an investment of more than $48 million to upgrade the 300,000-ton-per-year plant to one that would have a four-reactor configuration. The upgrade is expected to improve the facility's ability to produce superior quality high-flow materials for the packaging and automotive sectors. The new reactor will ensure that the products are completely bimodal.

By achieving bimodality, Borealis will be able to modify the characteristics of every one of its products to achieve specific processing and performance benefits. The aim of the project is to enhance the performance of the products and to do so, even normally contrasting properties will be bundled into a single product, or all required properties generally found in different products will be combined into a single product. The products will be used in thin-wall food packaging and automotive applications.

In the automotive sector, the high-flow polypropylene products will allow original equipment manufacturers and tier-one suppliers to enhance the benefits of improved stiffness or impact resistance and increase the output of consistently high-quality parts while maintaining low gap tolerances. Thin-wall packaging converters will be able to increase the cost efficiency of Borealis' manufacturing processes. Even at increased line speeds, material and energy usage will be reduced without any adverse effects on performance features such as sealing ability, transparency and crack resistance.
