Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BSE:500547) (BPCL) (New Delhi, India) is preparing to begin a 30-day planned maintenance turnaround on the 20,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) hydrocracker unit and the 850-BBL/d hydrogen production unit in the 60,000-BBL/d Numaligarh Refinery in Numaligarh, Assam. The turnaround drive is expected to begin in mid-September 2011. The overall cost of the turnarounds has been pegged at $4 million.

The major work includes maintenance and repair work for heat exchanger, tubes, a reformer column and a burner, said a source privy to these developments.

The BPCL Numaligarh refinery planning division is preparing the list of jobs to be undertaken and is expected to invite a request for quotation and bids document by May 2011.

Numaligarh Refinery Limited is a public-sector oil company, and it started its 60,000-BBL/d commencement of commercial operation from October 2000. BPCL is the major shareholder, with 61.65% of the company's paid up equity capital; the other shareholders being the government of Assam, with 12.35%, and Oil India Limited, with 26%. The majority of refinery products are marketed through BPCL and other oil companies. The major secondary processing units of the refinery include the delayed coker, amine treatment unit, sulfur recovery unit, catalytic reformer, naphtha hydrotreating unit, isomerization unit, and coke calcination unit. It processes a wide range of both indigenous and imported grades of crude oil.

BPCL is major refining company in India and owns four out of 21 operational refineries. The operational refineries of BPCL are the Mumbai, Numaligarh, Kochi and Bina refineries, which have a combined capacity of 470,000 BBL/d.
