Brazil Gains 248 Megawatts from Hydroelectric Sources in October

Hydroelectric sources will add 248 additional megawatts (MW) to Brazil's power generation account when three different projects begin the commissioning of some of their units this month.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Hydroelectric sources will add 248 additional megawatts (MW) to Brazil's power generation account when three different projects begin the commissioning of some of their units this month.

São Salvador Hydro Power Plant will start its second unit, a 121.6-MW Kaplan hydraulic turbine manufactured by GE Energy (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut). São Salvador's first unit, which is identical to the one being commissioned this month, was brought online in May this year. This addition will add up to 243.2 MW to the energy output from the plant. Work on the two turbines started more than three and a half years ago.

Located in eastern Santa Catarina state, in southeast Brazil, Salto Pilão Hydro Power Station will begin operations of its second generating unit, a 91.2-MW Voith Siemens (Heidenheim a. d. Brenz, Germany) Francis turbine. The first unit went through commissioning last month, making Salto Pilão accountable for a 182.4-MW plant generation capacity.

Finally, it is expected that by the end of the month, Baguari Hydro Power Project will start its second unit, a 35-MW Bulb turbine, also manufactured by Voith Siemens. Baguari's first unit was started nearly three months ago, while units 3 and 4 are supposed to be brought online one after another, probably between December this year and January 2010. Once it is fully operational, this plant in eastern Minas Gerais will supply 140 megawatts-hours to the grid.

With more than 600 plants accounting for 72% of the total national installed capacity, hydro-powered generation is the leading source of energy in Latin America's biggest economy.
