Brazilian Government Focuses on Energy Policy in First 100 Days

Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Brazilian government has highlighted its accomplishments in its first 100 days, with the energy industry standing prominently, especially in the renewable sector.
Renewable energy and sustainability have been at the core of the Brazilian government's policy in its first 100 days at the country's helm. In a statement, the Ministry of Energy highlighted some of its achievements in the past three months.
Since coming to power in January, the government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has highlighted the importance of the energy sector and the environment for the country. With this, Lula's administration is trying to reconcile the protection of the environment with the country's potential to scale up the fossil fuel industry. As a result, this has translated into the developing of renewable and more sustainable projects.
The new administration is expanding its focus on low-carbon hydrogen production by developing policies that will continue to grow the sector.
Moreover, biofuels have also been central to the administration's first 100 days. Earlier this year, the government decided to increase the blend of biodiesel and diesel from 10% to 12% starting this month. Additionally, the biodiesel blend will continue to increase by 1% annually until 2026.
This announcement is also expected to boost biofuel industry investments, promote cleaner fuels, and reduce Brazilian dependence on fuel imports.
Meanwhile, in the power sector, the ministry stated that it inaugurated 2,508 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity capacity in its first 100 days, accounting for 91% of the total power capacity increase of 2,746 MW.
Wind power generation increased by 1,485 MW, representing 54% of the total installed new capacity, while solar electricity saw a boost of 920 MW, accounting for 34%. Despite having a renewable-dominated electricity market due to its large hydropower capacity, Brazil continues to push for the development of new renewable power generation, with wind and solar energy at the helm.
"This feat reinforces Brazil's position as one of the world leaders in terms of clean and renewable electricity, with a prominent role at the forefront of sustainability in the world. Our effort is to make this scenario grow even more, taking better advantage of our natural resources, strengthening the sector, and promoting employment and income for our population," said Silveira.
Besides the developments in renewables, the new government is also preparing for new oil and gas block auctions, the finalization of concessions in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Amazonas, and higher volumes of natural gas production for domestic supply.
