Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Companhia Paulista de Forca e Luz Energia SA (CPFL Energia) (SAO:CPFE3) (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has announced its involvement in additional cogeneration projects at sugarcane processing plants. The company is already participating in two new undertakings and will invest more than $200 million installing steam turbine/generators and boilers to produce 145 megawatts (MW) in three of the four sugarcane plants owned by Pedra Agroindustrial SA (Serrana, Brazil).
CPFL Energia is one the biggest energy companies in Brazil, dedicated to the generation, commercialization and distribution of energy across the country. The company will manage and implement the projects through subsidiaries CPFL Bio Pedra (Serrana), CPFL Bio Buriti (Buritizal, Brazil) and CPFL Bio Ipe (Nova Independencia, Brazil). At the same time, Pedra Agroindustrial will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the cogeneration units. The contract states that, during the first 20 years, CPFL will commercialize the excess energy produced at the sites. After this, Pedra Agroindustrial will be in charge of commercializing the surplus power. The units located in the Nova Independencia (25 MW) and Buritizal (50 MW) plants are scheduled to start up in April 2011, while the 70-MW Serrana plant will being operating in April 2012.
Baldin Bioenergia SA (Pirassununga, Brazil) and Vale Verde Empreendimentos Agricolas Ltda (Recife, Brazil) are also associated to CPFL in similar cogeneration projects. Baldin Bioenergia will inaugurate a 45-MW bagasse-fired power unit in Pirassununga this month. Vale Verde Empreendimentos Agricolas is preparing the site to begin installation of a 40-MW project in the Baia Formosa plant, located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.
