Summary

Brookfield Renewable continues to develop wind and solar projects across the U.S., while its parent company is taking a bigger role in nuclear-energy development.

Solar Keeps on Shining

Brookfield Renewable Partners LP, a subsidiary of Brookfield Asset Management, is holding up amid a rough atmosphere for U.S.-based renewable energy. The subsidiary continues to develop wind and solar projects, complemented by a major win for its parent's nuclear-energy business. Industrial Info is tracking more than $23 billion worth of active and proposed renewable-energy projects from Brookfield and its subsidiaries, more than 80% of which is attributed to solar developments.

Brookfield's renewable-energy projects under construction include the Mulqueeney Windfarm in Livermore, California, which kicked off last spring and is set to wrap up in the second quarter of 2026. The facility is designed to replace a fleet of non-operational wind turbines installed during the 1980s in the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area (APWRA), which is home to some of the earliest U.S.-based wind projects.

Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Plant and Project databases can learn more about Mulqueeney--including capacities, investment values and necessary equipment--from a plant profile and detailed project report.

TerraForm Power, a Brookfield Renewable subsidiary, expects to begin construction later this year on the Cumberland Solar Plant in Columbia, Virginia. The state's market for clean energy has wind in its sails, following last year's election of the renewable-friendly Abigail Spanberger to the governor's office and Democrats into full control of the General Assembly. Subscribers can learn more from a plant profile and detailed project report.

Connor Teskey, the chief executive officer of Brookfield Renewable, acknowledged in a recent quarterly earnings-related conference call "some slowdown in permitting from the federal government" for onshore wind-energy projects, "but projects are still getting done." Solar, on the other hand, is "accelerating" because it is inexpensive and can be quickly deployed.

"We are scaling our development of low-cost, fast-to-market solar and onshore wind to meet the accelerating demand for power in the near term," Teskey said. "Over the past year, we commissioned a record amount of new solar and onshore wind capacity, and we are on track to reach a run rate of delivering roughly 10 gigawatts of new capacity per year."

By the Numbers
  • More than $23 billion: Total investment value of renewable-energy projects from Brookfield tracked by Industrial Info
  • More than 80%: Share of the total that is attributed to solar developments
  • $60 billion: Total investment in active and proposed nuclear projects with Westinghouse's technology that are tracked by Industrial Info

New Life for Nuclear

One of Brookfield's subsidiaries recently moved to the forefront of the U.S. revitalization of nuclear power. Westinghouse, which Brookfield co-owns with Cameco Corporation, agreed in October to establish a strategic partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce, under which the latter will arrange financing and facilitate the permitting and approvals for new Westinghouse nuclear reactors to be built in the U.S.

Parties involved hope the arrangement, which covers Westinghouse's AP1000 pressurized water reactor and AP300 small modular reactor (SMR), will revive the U.S. nuclear power sector. With their development fueled by the growth in data centers, particularly those geared toward AI, reactors built through the program will have an estimated total investment value of at least US$80 billion.

Among the highest-profile nuclear projects seeking Westinghouse's technology is Fermi America's Donald J. Trump Nuclear Station in Panhandle, Texas. Fermi is seeking permits to develop the project, which would generate 4.4 gigawatts (GW) from four of Westinghouse's AP1000 units. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.

Industrial Info is tracking nearly $60 billion worth of active and proposed nuclear-energy projects across the U.S. that are set to use, or are considering the use of, Westinghouse's technology. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed list of project reports.

"Slightly more than two years ago, we invested in Westinghouse, gaining exposure to this critical technology for current and future electricity grids, given its scale and baseload characteristics," Teskey said in the earnings call. "The current energy demand environment has reinvigorated the nuclear sector, with increasing recognition of the role nuclear can play to enable economic growth and provide energy security."

Brookfield Renewable reported net income of $410 million for fourth-quarter 2025, compared with a net loss of $9 million in the same period in the previous year; for the full year, it reported a net loss of $19 million, compared with a net loss of $464 million for 2024.

Key Takeaways
  • Brookfield's wind-energy projects have slowed, but still are progressing.
  • Solar projects still are developing at a fast pace because of their low cost and faster construction.
  • Brookfield's investment in Westinghouse is paying off with a commanding role in a possible U.S. nuclear renaissance.
