Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Caithness Long Island LLC, a subsidiary of Caithness Energy LLC (New York, New York), has completed construction and is set to commence commercial operation of the $300 million, 350-megawatt (MW) Long Island Energy Center located in Yaphank, New York.

Construction of the project began in spring 2007 and was completed earlier this year. Caithness is set to commence full commercial operation by the end of this month. The project consisted of constructing a combined cycle power island, equipped with a single dual-fueled 185-MW Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation SGT6-5000F W501F combustion turbine generator; a Deltak duct-fired Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG); and a 165-MW SST-900 Reheat steam turbine generator also powered by Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation.

State-of-the-art emissions equipment, such as selective catalytic reduction technology, also was utilized in the project to help control both nitrogen-oxide and carbon-monoxide emissions. Suffolk County Water Authority will facilitate the water requirements for the project. The facility will be connected to the grid through Long Island Power Authority's (LIPA) Holbrook-to-Brookhaven 138Kv substation. Once operational, LIPA will buy the total output capacity of the project through a power-purchasing agreement with Caithness.

Siemens Westinghouse Corporation, located in Orlando, Florida, a subsidiary of Siemens Corporation USA (New York, New York), acted as the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction contractor, while Fresh Meadow Mechanical Corporation (Fresh Meadows, New York), acted as the general contractor throughout the construction of the project.
