California's Silver Springs Networks Backs Malaysian Push for Smart Grid Cities

Masers Energy Malaysia and the Green Special Economic Zone project have created an innovative public-private plan to convert a Malaysian agricultural region and small industry zone

Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Masers Energy Malaysia (MEM) (San Jose, California) and the Green Special Economic Zone project have created an innovative public-private plan to convert a Malaysian agricultural region and small industry zone into the first "smart grid city" in Asia. The smart city concept is aimed at bringing the economic and societal benefits of smart infrastructure to Malaysia and creating a "green corridor" in the Melaka region.

Silver Spring Networks Incorporated (NYSE:SSNI) (Redwood City, California), a leading provider of smart infrastructure projects, has entered into an agreement with MEM for the execution of projects in Malaysia. Under the agreement, SSNI will provide the smart software, technology, planning and services for MEM's Smart Grid City Melaka and Special Economic Zone Melaka, which is expected to begin by the end of 2013.

The first phase of the project will include the deployment of SSNI's IPv6-based network, which establishes a communications foundation for a city's assets regardless of distribution topology. SSNI is expanding the functionality of its smart infrastructure platform to support a range of smart city solutions, such as intelligent street lighting, traffic signal control, and electric vehicle charging.

SSNI also has a Smart Energy Platform that supports advanced metering, outage restoration and load-management operations. This allows utilities to improve smart energy management, while enhancing customer service and reducing costs. SSNI claims to connect more homes and businesses globally that any other smart grid provider.

MEM CEO Dato Seri Suhaimi said that his company partnered with SSNI to deliver innovative smart city services in Malaysia, and thus increase economic growth.
