Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). A start-up Canadian meat packing venture, privately held, Canadian Premium Meats, Incorporated (Red Deer, Alberta), is moving forward with plans to build a new organic meat slaughtering and packing plant in Lacombe, Alberta. This new location will offer custom-meat processing that will be tailored to suit the customer’s individual needs and specifications. The project will consist of a 109,000 square-foot packing plant on four acres of property in Lacombe, off 53rd Street in the Industrial Park, and will be used for slaughtering, processing, and cold storage.

Canadian Premium Meats selected DGH Engineering, Limited (Saint Andrews, Manitoba) to provide design and construction management services for the project. The slaughtering and processing operation will focus on processing organically-grown bison, elk, and beef and will have the capacity of processing 120 animals a day. The plant will be federally inspected and European Union approved, with a meat-tracking program that will allow the country of origin to be tracked for all meats.

Ground breaking is expected to begin on Monday, May 22, 2006, and construction is expected to take nine to ten months to complete. Cost estimates for the project are in the $10 million range.

The Canadian beef industry has been looking into growing processing capabilities within its own borders ever since the 2003 discovery of Mad Cow disease, or as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in Canada, that lead to a detrimental loss of international markets for live cattle north of the border. Some nine new beef processing plants are in the works for Canada, totaling over $375 million in capital costs.
