Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In May 2010, CariSal Unlimited (Claxton Bay, Trinidad) awarded a contract for engineering, procurement and construction to Proman-Gmbh (Dusseldorf, Germany) to build a grassroot caustic soda plant. Along with a calcium chloride production line, the plant will be in the industrial zone of Point Lisas in central Trinidad, west of the town Couva.

The civil-site construction is planned to begin in September 2010. Upon completion, which is planned in the first quarter of 2012, the $100 million caustic soda plant is expected to produce 120,000 metric tons per year of caustic soda. The $150 million calcium chloride unit addition is expected to produce 165,000 metric tons per year of calcium chloride. When the site is operational, CariSal will become the second-largest dry calcium chloride plant in the Western Hemisphere and the largest caustic soda plant in the West Indies. The company has also signed a 10-year argeement with Alcoa World Alumina LLC (Point Comfort, Texas) for caustic soda supply, after the plant´s start-up.

CariSal Unlimited is a wholly owned subsidiary of CariSal Holdings Limited (Austin, Texas) with principal shareholders including Seneca Chemical (Anjou, Canada) and Guardian Energy Holdings Limited (Westmoorings, Trinidad and Tobago). The subsidiary is a special purpose company founded in 2005 for the construction of this petrochemical site. CariSal also supplies ClearPath ice-melting crystals to the U.S. market. It has operations in Middletown, New York, and Trinidad and Tobago. In August 2008, The company announced a $50 million investment from Denham Capital. Other sponsors for the construction of the caustic soda plant and calcium chloride unit include INNOVAONE Investments of Trinidad and Tobago (Port of Spain, Trinidad), Seneca Chemical and TTEK Project Management Limited (Claxton Bay, Trinidad) and Easi Industrial Supplies Limited (Savonetta, Point Lisas).
