Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Total SO2 emissions in China fell 0.6% in the first five months of 2007, compared with the same period of 2006. However, measureable chemical oxygen demand (COD) increased 0.5%, announced by Zhou Shengxian, director of State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) on July 4, 2007.
During the first five months of 2007, Chinas economy experienced a growth rate of more than 10%. In addition there was an increase of value added industry of 18%, where the growth rate in high energy consumption and high pollution industries reached 20%, which certainly increased the difficulty in environmental protection, especially in the reduction of pollutant emissions.
However, Mr. Shengxian is confident in the reduction of pollutant emissions in the latter half of this year. The environment protection department is confident on realizing emission reduction both in SO2 and COD, two major pollutants, he said.
Zhou Shengxian also highly affirmed the contribution of the power sector in the reduction of SO2 emissions. In the first five months, a total of 27,600 megawatts of installed capacity was newly furnished with desulfurization scrubbers, and 4,100 megawatts of small thermal power units were shutdown nationwide. Under the situation that the total thermal power output increased by 18.4%, the total SO2 emission in the power sector was reduced by 5.4%. This is an important contribution to the emission reduction of SO2, said Zhou Shengxian.
In the first five months, construction of pollution treatment facilities accelerated. Approximately, 68 urban sewage processing plants were completed with newly added daily processing capacity of 3.8 metric tons. More than 1,100 enterprises with heavy pollution in the papermaking, soap and brewing sectors have been eliminated.
In addition, the environmental protection department has placed the strict execution of environmental law as an important work in emissions reduction. By the end of June, about 220,000 enterprises nationwide had been inspected, more than 8,000 enterprises with illegal behaviors have been put on record, and 170 related persons in charge have been accused. Illegal behaviors have been rigorously reduced.
