Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Chinese energy supplier CLP Holdings Limited (HKG:0002) (Hong Kong) has placed an order with Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) (Randers, Denmark) for 24 wind turbines for the first phase of the Harpanahalli windfarm in Karnataka, which is in southern India.
Under the terms of the contract, Vestas will supply the project with 24 V82 wind turbines, each of which has a nominal generating capacity of 1.65 MW. The first of the turbines is scheduled for delivery during the third quarter of this year, and the final delivery is scheduled for the first quarter of 2011.
The contract, placed with Vestas Asia Pacific Wind Technology Pte. Limited (Singapore), Vestas' Asian subsidiary, also covers a 10-year service and maintenance contract and a VestasOnline Business Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) monitoring system.
CLP is one of Vestas' global customers and is active in Hong Kong and Australia, in addition to India. Within India, the company, through its fully owned Indian subsidiary CLP Power India Pvt. Limited (Mumbai), operates windfarms totaling almost 300 MW, together with a 655-MW combined-cycle power plant at Paguthan in Gujarat.
In addition to these operational projects, CLP is constructing windfarms totaling 150 MW in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, and a 1,320-MW coal-fired thermal power plant at Jhajjar in Haryana.
Vestas has been involved in the wind power sector in India for more than 10 years and recently supplied wind turbines for CLP's windfarm at Theni, in Tamil Nadu. At the end of June this year, Vestas could boast more than 2,300 MW of wind power installations in India.
Both companies are confident that the Indian wind sector has a strong future, with CLP India's Managing Director, Rajiv Mishra, saying, "The Indian wind industry is witnessing an unprecedented change in which both companies can benefit from a long-term relationship."
Vestas is involved in several major windfarm installations within Europe, notably the Bligh Bank offshore windfarm, which is 46 kilometers from the Belgian port of Zeebrugge, and the Thanet offshore windfarm, which is between Ramsgate on the English south coast and the French port of Dunkirk.
Bligh Bank windfarm has a planned capacity of 165 MW, and the first of its 55 turbines was installed in March this year. The Thanet offshore windfarm has 100 wind turbines, with a total capacity of 300 MW. The final wind turbine was installed at Thanet in June this year, and the windfarm is due for commissioning by the end of the year.
