China's Power Consumption Increases 11.93% in First Two Months of 2008

Power consumption in the first industry (agriculture-plantations, forestry, livestock and fisheries) reached 10.64 billion kWh, up 3.75%.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--From January to February 2008, China's overall power consumption reached 523.94 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), up 11.93% compared with the same period last year, according to a report released on March 19, 2008, by the China Electricity Council.

•Power consumption in the first industry (agriculture-plantations, forestry, livestock and fisheries) reached 10.64 billion kWh, up 3.75%.
•Power consumption in the second industry (construction, manufacturing and energy production) reached 389.25 billion kWh, up 11.15%.
•Power consumption in the third industry (service and transportation) reached 58.09 billion kWh, up 13.38%.
•Power consumption in urban and township residential areas reached 65.96 billion kWh, up 19.93% year over year.

From January to February, the overall power consumption reached 383.72 billion kWh, an increase of 11.19% year over year of which the light and heavy industries rose 5.36% and 12.64%, respectively.

There are 16 provinces and regions with increases above the national average level (11.93%):

•Anhui: 19.99%
•Inner Mongolia: 19.28%
•Shanghai: 17.96%
•Gansu: 17.78%
•Qinghai: 17.43%
•Xinjiang: 17.3%
•Henan: 16.88%
•Hubei: 16.06%
•Guangxi: 15.85%
•Shandong: 15.06%
•Hebei: 14.84%
•Tianjin: 14.02%
•Jiangsu: 13.97%
•Jilin: 13.45%
•Shaanxi: 12.42%
•Zhejiang: 12.25%

In regard to power generation, the national power output in the first two months of the year reached 516.93 billion kWh, an increase of 11.3% year over year. Hydropower output reached 47.86 billion kWh, up 9.7%; thermal power output reached 452.73 billion kWh, up 10.7%; and nuclear power output reached 10.53 billion kWh, up 38.6%. Power generation from major grids nationwide reached 450.72 billion kWh, up 15.07%, and the maximum load reached 426.51 million kilowatts (kW), up 15.62% compared with the same period last year.

From January to February, the total installed capacity of power plants of 60 megawatts (MW) or above reached 686.71 million kW, an increase of 14.5% year over year.

•The installed capacity of hydropower reached 122.45 million kW, up 14%.
•Thermal power rose to 549.94 million kW, up 13.9%.
•Nuclear power rose to 8.85 million kW, up 29.2%.

The average accumulated utilization hours of power generation equipment nationwide was 748 hours, a drop of 21 hours year over year.

•The average hours of utilization of hydropower equipment was 360 hours, the same as last year.
•The average hours of utilization of thermal power equipment was 830 hours, a drop of 26 hours.

The average coal consumption during the period was 346 g/kWh, down 12 g/kWh compared with the same period last year.
