Cielo Wind Power Begins Construction for the Caprock Wind Ranch in New Mexico

Leading wind developer, Cielo Wind Power LLC, the development arm of Texas Wind Power Company (Austin, Texas), has begun construction for the $65 million, 80-megawatt (MW) Caprock Wind Ranch located in Tucumcari, Quay County, New Mexico.

Construction for the Caprock project began in October 2004 and is anticipated to be in commercial operation by the spring of 2005. The Caprock Wind Ranch will consist of eighty towers, each fitted with a 1MW Mitsubishi wind turbine/generator set to supply renewable energy to the grid.

Xcel Energy (NYSE:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) will buy the energy generated by Caprock under a fifteen year Power Purchasing Agreement, once the project begins full commercial operation.

Texas Wind Power Company will act as the prime contractor for the project, while Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will perform the turbine erection. Caprock Wind Limited Partnership (Austin, Texas), an affiliate of Cielo Wind, will be the operator of the project.
