Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Construction is currently underway for a $45 million power plant expansion planned on the campus of Rice University, a private, independent university, in Houston, Texas.

Plans are to design and construct a new utility plant located on the South West side of campus. Construction consists of a 20,000 square foot building with the installation of (1) 40,000 lbs/hr natural gas-fired boiler or (6) 200hp boilers (manufacturer not decided) plus the installation of (4) 2,500 ton York centrifugal chillers to support future growth at the campus. Construction started in mid May 2007 and completion is slated for the summer of 2008.

The existing utility plant started operations approximately 100 years ago. With constant university growth, the current utility plant will exceed available capacity despite numerous amounts of upgrades. The new South Plant will thus support future growth providing additional capacity and efficiency.

Morris Architects located in Houston, Texas was awarded the prime architectural services contract and Miner-Dedrick Construction Company (Houston, Texas) was awarded the prime general construction contract for the expansion. Gowan Incorporated, located in Houston, Texas, was awarded the prime mechanical contract for the expansion.

Rice University, a private and independent university, was founded in 1891. In 2006, total undergraduate enrollment was approximately 2,995 and total graduate enrollment was 2,013. The 2006-2007 operating budget was estimated around $379 million.
