Construction Begins on Georgia Tech’s $90 Million Nano-Biotech Research Center

Following several years of planning, the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, Georgia) has begun construction on a new 188,000 square foot building to house nanotech and bio-research. Featuring over 30,000 square feet of clean room space, the building will also house academic and administration areas.

The new center will quadruple the existing clean room capacity at Georgia Tech. A clean room environment is essential to both the research and academic instruction of nanotechnology and most other bio-scientific disciplines, including pharmaceuticals and microelectronics. In addition to being expensive to build, the requirements for air filtering within a clean room area are stringent. The nanotech center will house a Class 10 clean room, meaning that there will be a maximum of 10, 0.5 micrometer particles/cubic foot of air. This is opposed to a typical office environment which contains more than 1 million particles/cubic foot.

Scheduled for completion in 2008, the new center will provide research space for scientists from a number of universities and a variety of fields.
