Construction Is Underway for $315 Million Enriched Uranium Plant in Tennessee

An estimated $315 million will be spent to construct this new plant on what was once a parking lot

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) (Washington, DC) broke ground on its new enriched uranium plant last summer. The plant is being constructed at the existing Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and will be owned and operated by BWXT Y-12, which is a joint venture between BWX Technologies Incorporated (Lynchburg, Virginia) and Bechtel National Incorporated (Richland, Washington). Industrial Information Resources has been tracking the status of this project since March of 2000.

An estimated $315 million will be spent to construct this new plant on what was once a parking lot, which will be used to store the vast majority of the nation's highly enriched uranium that is currently located on this site. This will, in essence, condense the five areas of storage space that is currently located at the Y-12 site into a single storage area.

Parsons Infrastructure and Technologies (Oak Ridge, Tennessee) handled the architecture and engineering for the new plant, and Caddell/Blaine (Oak Ridge, Tennessee), a joint venture between Caddell Construction (Montgomery, Alabama) and Blaine Construction (Knoxville, Tennessee) have been selected to perform construction. The mechanical contract was awarded to Foley Company (Kansas City, Kansas) and Broadway Electrical (Oak Ridge, Tennessee) was awarded the electrical portion. Construction on this new plant is scheduled to be complete in early 2007.

The original Y-12 complex was constructed in the 1940’s for use in World War II efforts and is currently being used for storage, dismantlement, and protection of nuclear materials and weapons.
