An additional $200 million for a scrubber and SCR is likely to be invested in 2009 to reduce emissions from the 650-megawatt power station.

Released Thursday, February 09, 2006

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Info Resources; Houston, Texas). Consumers Energy, Incorporated, a principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE:CMS)(Jackson, Mississippi), expects to spend $1 billion or more between now and 2010 to install emission-controlled equipment designed to address air quality at its plants in Michigan.

In order to reduce emissions of air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) at power plants, major equipment such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) units and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers are being installed.

Construction is more than halfway complete on an SCR project at the 820-megawatt J H Campbell #3 Power Station (West Olive, Michigan), with completion scheduled for the end of this year. Babcock & Wilcox, Incorporated (Barbeton, Ohio) is providing engineering and construction services on the $350 million project that started at the end of 2004. A study is also being done to install a $120 million scrubber. This project is tentatively set for 2009.

An additional $200 million for a scrubber and SCR is likely to be invested in 2009 to reduce emissions from the 650-megawatt J H Campbell #1 & #2 Power Station (West Olive, Michigan). Feasibility studies are moving forward for a $180 million scrubber project at the 530-megawatt Dan E Karn Power Station #1 & #2 (Essexville, Michigan) and $90 million for the 325-megawatt John R Whiting Power Station (Erie, Michigan). These projects are expected to move forward between 2009 and 2011.

Scrubber additions are also being considered on Units #4 and #5 at the B C Cobb Power Station (Muskegon, Michigan) in 2012.

Details of these projects, along with more than 400 other environmental compliance projects can be found in Industrial Info’s Environmental Compliance Database.
