Cook Pharmica Carves Out New $70 Million Biotech Contract Manufacturing Facility from Former Electronics Plant In Indiana

Cook Pharmica LLC, a division of the Cook Group, Incorporated (Bloomington, Indiana), recently completed construction on the first phase of a new biopharmaceutical contract manufacturing campus in Bloomington, Indiana. The $70 million plant was carved out of the former Thomson Consumer Electronics facility to produce monoclonal antibodies.

Basically, the antibodies are used to create biopharmaceuticals that can “deliver” the drug to the targeted area within the body. The site will also offer cell banking, analytical and process development, stability storage and testing.

While development services should be available in early 2006, actual manufacturing will have to wait until validation of the plant is complete, which is anticipated by the third quarter of 2006. Beyond the plant’s state-of-the-art bioreactors and labs, the company’s clients will also have the unique ability, pending approval, to view the actual production process over a secure internet connection. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other regulatory agencies will also have access to this service.

R.L. Turner (Zionsville, Indiana) was tapped by Cook to oversee construction of the fast-track project and completed the plant in only ten months, rather than the more typical 18-24 months needed for a project of this size. The initial phase added 124,000 square feet of manufacturing space, with room available to eventually expand to almost 500,000 square feet.
