Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Cooperative owned and operated, Dakota Turkey Growers Coop (Aberdeen, South Dakota) has begun construction on a new $45 million turkey processing plant in Huron, South Dakota. The cooperative was formed so that the group of local turkey growers could not only raise its own birds, but also process them, keeping more dollars in its own pockets rather than selling the turkeys to outside processors. Plans call for the construction of an 185,000 square foot slaughtering and processing plant that will process about eight million birds per year into fresh and cooked turkey products.
The plant is scheduled to be operational by November of 2005 and birds are expected to begin being processed by January 2006. The facility will initially hire 400 workers and employment could grow to over 750 within five years.
Dakota Turkey Growers is comprised of a group of cooperative producers who raise more than five million turkeys annually in the Dakotas and the western edge of Minnesota. The groups purpose is to maintain ownership of its product and to participate in the processing, allowing the coop to keep more of the profits and add value to their turkey production.
