Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Datang International Power Generation Company Limited (SHA:601991) (Beijing), the listed flagship of China Datang Corporation (Beijing), has changed the originally planned two 600-megawatt (MW) supercritical coal-fired units that were planned for Phase II construction of the Ningde Power Plant. The company will now use two 660-MW ultra supercritical units. The environmental impact assessment of the change is expected to receive approval from the Ministry of Environmental Protection shortly.
The Datang Ningde Power Plant is located in Ningde City in the Fujian province. The power plant, which currently has two 600-MW units, is one of the key power source projects in the West Bank Economic Zone of the Taiwan Strait. Construction of the two 600-MW supercritical units with desulfurization devices in Phase I began August 30, 2004, and the first unit was put into commercial operation on June 6, 2006. This was the shortest period of time ever for construction of a 600-MW unit.
Following the completion of Phase I in 2006, construction of Phase II was officially kicked off in 2007, and both units were put into operation in 2009. As reported, all units of the power plant are designed to use the prepared fine coal produced from Tashan Mining Zone in Shanxi province, with coal produced from Dongsheng Mining Zone in Ordos City of Inner Mongolia as a supplement.
In responding to the nation's enhanced energy conservation and emission-reduction policy, Datang International decided to alter the originally planned supercritical units to more efficient ultra-supercritical units in Phase II and adopt more comprehensive environmental protection measures for the power plant.
According to the approval of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Datang International will cancel the bypass in the flue gas desulfurization system for all units built in Phase I and Phase II by the end of 2011. An additional denitration system based on selective catalytic reduction will be added to the two units built in Phase II. Total cost of this environmental improvement will be about $30 million.
