Researched by Industrial Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Dell Incorporated's (NASDAQ:DELL) (Round Rock, Texas) largest computer-manufacturing plant, a 750,000-square-foot facility in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, will shut down production in the next few months. Dell had announced layoffs at the plant in March 2010, but gave no indication that the plant was in danger of closing its doors.
A demand shift in laptops over desktop computers was a factor behind the decision to phase out the facility. The Winston-Salem closure is the latest in a series of efforts by Dell to cut expenses worldwide by billions of dollars.
Last year, Dell closed a desktop-manufacturing plant in Austin, Texas, and pink slips were issued in Canada and Ireland locations. The North Carolina factory, which produces a computer every five seconds, will eliminate almost 1,000 jobs, with 575 factory workers to be laid off at the end of November, and the rest in January 2011. Affected employees will receive severance packages.
The Winston-Salem plant opened its doors in 2005. Dell is the only company that manufactures and assembles computers in America. The facility will be leased or sold after removal and relocation of electrical equipment and supplies.
