Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) (Randers, Denmark), one of the world's largest wind turbine manufacturers, recently secured a contract from EDP Renovaveis SA (ELI:EDPR) (Oviedo, Spain) to supply 76 3-megawatt (MW) V90-series turbines for two wind power projects in Romania. EDP Renovaveis, a 77.5% subsidiary of Energias de Portugal (OTC:EDPFY) (Lisbon, Portugal), is the fourth largest producer of wind power in the world.
Vestas will be responsible for delivering and installing the turbines. The firm will also provide a VestasOnline Business supervisory control and data acquisition solution to aid in sophisticated remote monitoring, data collection, reporting and control of the wind power systems. The company will also offer a five-year service as part of the agreement.
Vestas plans to start installing the first set of wind turbines by the end of this year. The financial value of the contract has not been disclosed. The total power produced from the two renewable energy plants is expected to save at least 195,500 tons of carbon-dioxide emissions every year. The total installed wind power generation capacity of Romania was about 76 MW by the end of 2008. The two projects will increase the country's wind capacity significantly.
In February 2009, Vestas won a contract to supply 67 3-MW V90 turbines for two projects -- the SC Wind Power Park SRL and the SC Ewind SRL projects -- in the Constanta region of Romania.
In yet another recent development, Vestas was awarded a contract by EDF Energies Nouvelles SA (EPA:EEN) (Paris), a 50% subsidiary of
Electricite de France SA (EPA:EDF) (Paris), to supply 37 3-MW V90 wind turbines for a project in the municipality of Bonorva in Sardinia, Italy. Vestas will supply, erect and commission the turbines in addition to providing a five-year service. The company plans to begin delivering the turbines in 2009 and will complete the order by 2010. Upon commissioning, the project will generate enough electricity to power more than 50,000 homes in Italy and will also save 48,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
Over 50% of EDF Energies Nouvelles' wind power installations are based on Vestas' turbines. This is the third project being executed in Sardinia jointly by the two firms. At the end of 2008, the total wind generation capacity of EDF Energies Nouvelles was 1,171 MW in Mediterranean Europe, comprising Turkey, France, Greece, Portugal and Italy.
Vestas introduced the V90 wind turbine in 2002 and has since successfully installed more than 1,000 units across the world.
