Detroit Edison Plans for Boiler Upgrade at Michigan Plant in 2005

Detroit Edison Company (Detroit, Michigan) is conducting preliminary engineering for a boiler upgrade on Unit #3

Released Tuesday, November 16, 2004

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources Incorporated, Houston, Texas). Detroit Edison Company (Detroit, Michigan), DTE Energy Corporation's (NYSE:DTE ) (Detroit, Michigan) largest subsidiary, is conducting preliminary engineering for a boiler upgrade on Unit #3 at the River Rouge Power Station (River Rouge, Michigan). Project completion is expected at the end of 2005 for the 56-day-long project.

The 946-megawatt coal/oil-fired power plant is included of a Foster Wheeler front-fired dry bottom boiler with a 358-megawatt Allis-Chalmers turbine/generator set, an Alstom tangential-fired dry bottom boiler, with a 293-megawatt Siemens Westinghouse turbine/generator set, a 283-megawatt General Electric turbine/generator, with a Babcock & Wilcox front-fired dry bottom boiler, and four 3-megawatt internal combustion turbines. All units came into service between 1956 and 1958.

The boiler house is usually referred to as the heart of any steam generation plant. Most operations within the plant would not be operable if all the boilers are shut down for a planned outage or unexpected reasons. Routine inspection and repairs are done to the boiler to assure more reliable performance.

The project scope for the upgrade at the River Rouge plant is to replace the high-pressure heater section (air/super/reheat), tubes, walls, refractory, and fans, as well as inspection and repair to the turbine and generator components.

Detroit Edison Company owns several power stations in Michigan, among which are the 1,017-megawatt Greenwood Energy Center (Avoca, Michigan), the 1,541-megawatt Saint Clair Power Station (East China, Michigan), the 1,560-megawatt Belle River Power Station (China Township, Michigan), and the 1,154-megawatt Fermi Nuclear Power Station (Newport, Michigan).
