Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Maryland developers are looking at the development of more than 4,600 megawatts (MW) of power generation to be added between 2013 and the end of 2017. More than 85% of this new generation will be from renewable sources.
The majority of the planned additions come in the form of three huge offshore wind projects with a total generating capacity exceeding 3,600 MW. A 640-MW natural gas-fired combined-cycle project is also being planned.
There are five planned waste-to-energy projects totaling 306.8 MW, three (237 MW) that will use municipal solid waste (MSW) and two (total 69.8 MW) that will utilize biomass, including wood and/or poultry litter as fuel. Solar energy will complete the planned additions, using photovoltaic technology at three solar plants totaling 35 MW.
Developers include:
- Deepwater Wind LLC (Hoboken, New Jersey)
- NRG Bluewater Wind LLC (Hoboken), a subsidiary of NRG Energy (NYSE:NRG) (Princeton, New Jersey)
- Fibrowatt LLC, a subsidiary of holding company Homeland Renewable Energy (Langhorne, Pennsylvania)
- CPV Maryland LLC and CPV Piney Reach LLC, subsidiaries of Competitive Power Ventures Incorporated (Silver Spring, Maryland)
