Dominion Acquires Three New England Power Stations

One of the three power stations that Dominion has acquired is the Manchester Street Power Station located in Providence, Rhode Island.

On January 1, 2005, Dominion Resources Incorporated (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) completed the purchase of three northeast power plants from USGen New England Incorporated for $642 million. The plants are located in Providence, Rhode Island, Salem, Massachusetts, and Somerset, Massachusetts.

One of the three power stations that Dominion has acquired is the Manchester Street Power Station located in Providence, Rhode Island. This station is a natural gas-fired power plant consisting of three 109-megawatt (MW) megawatts Siemens combined-cycle combustion turbine and three 50MW ABB steam turbines. The second power plant that Dominion has purchased is the 806MW Salem Harbor Power Station located in Salem, Massachusetts. Salem Power Station has four steam turbines located at this site. Unit 1 steam turbine is an 82MW GE steam turbine; Unit 2 is a SWPC steam turbine and is also 82MW. The other two turbines are both GE steam turbines, but Unit 3 is 166MW, and Unit 4 is 476MW.

The third power plant that Dominion has agreed to buy is the 1,611MW Brayton Point Power Station located in Somerset, Massachusetts. The first two units are GE steams turbines, each 241MW. Unit 3 is a 643MW SWPC steam turbine, and Unit 4 is a 475 MWGE steam turbine. The other four are 2.75MW internal combustion engines.

USGen New England sold these power plants as part of the bankruptcy court supervised divestiture of its fossil fuel assets. Dominion purchased these power plants to increase the electricity it generates by 10%, giving them a total of 28,340MW.

Dominion is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. It is one of the largest energy producers, serving five million customers in eight states.

USGen New England is a subsidiary of National Energy & Gas Transmission Incorporated and is based in Bethesda, Maryland.
