Dominion Takes Over Massachusetts Coal-Fired Power Plant and Resumes NOx Reduction Project

The system is about 200 feet high (20 stories) and has a ceramic grid coated with catalysts and uses an ammonia injection system to reduce NOx - Includes a chart showing the number of NOx reduction equipment requirement projects by state in the New England and Northeast Regions.

Released Tuesday, February 08, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Dominion (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) completed the acquisition of Brayton Point Power Station (Somerset, Massachusetts) on January 1, 2005, from USGen New England, a subsidiary of bankrupt National Energy and Gas Transmission (NEGT) (Bethesda, Maryland), and is now starting to complete NOx (nitrogen oxide) reduction projects on units #1 and #3 by installing Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) units.

Brayton Point Units #1 and #3 are coal dry bottom boilers. The 241-megawatt (MW) Unit #1 has an Alstom/CE tangential-fired boiler, and the 642 MW Unit #3 has a B&W supercritical opposed-fired boiler. Stone & Webster (Stoughton, Massachusetts), a Shaw Group Incorporated (NYSE:SGR)(Baton Rouge, Louisiana) subsidiary, is providing engineering for the project. The major equipment supplier is Babcock Power Environmental Incorporated (BPEI) (Worcester, Massachusetts), a division of Babcock Power Incorporated (Danvers, Massachusetts). O'Connor Constructors (Canton, Massachusetts) is doing the installation.

The SCR system should reduce NOx emissions by 85%. The system is about 200 feet high (20 stories) and has a ceramic grid coated with catalysts and uses an ammonia injection system to reduce NOx. This reduction is achieved as combustion off gases and ammonia are combined and passed through a catalytic reaction process. The end process of this reaction produces nitrogen gas and water, which can be released safely to the atmosphere.
