Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The signing ceremony for the survey and engineering contract for the 2,000-megawatt (MW) Taizhou No.2 Power Plant grassroot project, between East China Electric Power Design Institute (ECEPDI) (Shanghai), a regional subsidiary of China Power Engineering Consulting Corporation (CPECC) (Beijing), and Zhejiang Provincial Energy Group Company Limited (Hangzhou), was held in Hangzhou, the capital city of East China's Zhejiang province on July 14, 2011.

Ni Chenggang, director of Taizhou No.2 Power Plant Preparation Office, signed the contract on behalf of both parties. He Yihao, the deputy chief engineer of Zhejiang Energy Group; Zhao Hu; Yang Binliang, the vice president of ECEPDI, among other leaders and representatives, attended the ceremony, CPECC announced on July 21, 2011.

"The signing of contract means that the project has entered its implementation stage," said Chen Shengming, the president of ECEPDI, at the signing ceremony. According to the schedule, construction on the project will kick off later this year, and the project will begin operations in late 2013.

Taizhou Power Plant is an old power plant with six coal-fired units, each of 135 MW, that have operated for more than 20 years. In response to the nation's energy conservation and emission reduction policy, Zhejiang Energy Group proposed to build the second power plant in Taizhou.

The proposed Taizhou No. 2 Power Plant, which is south of Jiantiaogang Port in Caotou Village, in Sanmen County, has a total planned capacity of 4,000 MW; of which, two 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical, coal-fired units will be built in Phase I. According to plans, the project will replace 1,133 MW of small thermal power units in Zhejiang province, including units 2 to 5 in Taizhou Power Plant. Upon completion, the project will play an important role in alleviating the power shortage in Zhejiang, in improving the economy and reliability of the Zhejiang Grid, and in promoting the local economic development.
