East Kentucky Power Completes Construction of 268-Megawatt E.A. Gilbert Generating Unit

EKPC anticipates full commercial operation of the project by April 2005.

Released Friday, January 28, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Regional power producer, East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC) (Winchester, Kentucky), has completed construction and is in start-up testing of the $400 million unit addition at the H L Spurlock Power Station located in Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky.

Construction for the project started in June 2002 and was completed at the end of November 2004. EKPC anticipates full commercial operation of the project by April 2005. Named after former EKPC Board Chairman, E.A. "Ned" Gilbert, the E.A. Gilbert generating unit consists of an Alstom Combustion Engineering atmospheric fluidized bed boiler (ACFB) and a 268-megawatt GE Power Systems Tandem Compound Double Flow steam turbine generator. The unit will utilize a circulating fluidized bed process that eliminates about 98% of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and about 80% of nitrogen oxide (NO2) emissions. In addition to coal, Gilbert will also have the capability to use several million tires and 150,000 tons of biomass such as sawdust and other wood products annually as an alternate fuel source.

Alstom Power (NYSE:ABB ) , based in Windsor, Connecticut performed the owner's engineering and acted as the general contractor for the project. Alstom Power will also operate the new unit. General Electric Power Systems headquartered in Norcross, Georgia, performed the unit installation.
