Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC) (Franklin, Kentucky) has completed the reserve cooling tower at the coal-fired John Sherman Cooper Power Station in Somerset in Pulaski County, Kentucky. The cooling tower was built so that when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lowers the level of water at Wolf Creek Dam in Russell County, Kentucky, the tower will maintain a constant water temperature in order to run Unit 2 without affecting fish and aquatic life at Lake Cumberland.
The $24 million cooling tower was installed because the lake level will need to be lowered to fix seepage problems at the Wolf Creek Dam and because drought conditions could possibly cause problems with the lake level in the future. The cooling tower will keep Unit 2 functioning normally without significant impact on Lake Cumberland's aquatic life.
