Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On November 24, 2009, Ecuador's state-owned electricity firm Termoesmeraldas S.A. (Esmeraldas, Ecuador) will award feasibility studies for the construction of a 132-megawatt (MW), fuel oil-fired power plant in the city of Shushufindi, in the Sucumbio province.
According to the bidding documentation, the studies include a prefeasibility studies evaluation; a detailed elaboration of market and financial studies; site studies; a detailed design of the power facility; cost estimation; and planning and scheduling for investments and construction. Study costs are estimated at $100,000, and the studies should be ready in 90 days.
With a planned investment of $155 million, the Shushufindi Power Plant will be located near the Amazonas Refinery, which is owned and operated by state-owned company Petroecuador (Quito, Ecuador) through subsidiary Petroindustrial. The 10 medium-speed internal combustion engines to be installed at Shushufindi will be fueled by Residual Oil No.6, which comes directly from the refinery. An engineering, procurement and construction bidding process is expected to be conducted between the second and fourth quarters of 2010, with construction projected for the end of 2010.
In August 2009, Ecuador's government announced the "2009-2020 Energetic Master Plan," which is designed to boost the production of energy from renewable sources to reduce the dependence on oil-based production and secure the sustainability of the national energy matrix. As a result, major hydro projects, such as the 1,200-MW Coca-Codo Sinclair Hydro Power Station and the Toachi-Pilaton Hydro Power Complex, were reactivated. In the context of the Master Plan, Termoesmeraldas S.A. approved the Shushufindi Project and the 144-MW expansion of Termoesmeraldas Power Station, using eight internal combustion engines to cover the electricity demand expansion in the short term, and to cope with the peaking demand in the future.
