Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Enbridge Incorporated (NYSE:ENB ) (Calgary, Alberta) is in the early development stages for a new pipeline to export bitumen from the oil sands rich region of Fort McMurray to Southern markets. The planned Waupisoo Pipeline will originate in the Fort McMurray area and extend south-southwest for nearly 450 kilometers and will terminate in Edmonton. This would allow the regional producers to transport its bitumen to the upgraders and refineries located in the Edmonton area. The proposed pipeline will have an initial daily capacity of between 300,000 to 400,000 barrels of bitumen. The initial phase of the pipeline will include three pump stations and storage facilities at the origin and terminus of the new line.
Enbridge has been working with potential shippers, and given the timing of several pending oil sands projects, expects that a production decision will be taken on the development of the $325 million pipeline some time in early 2005. Enbridge expects a 12-18 month permitting process, whereupon construction could begin sometime in 2007. That would put project completion in late 2007 at the earliest.
