Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--German energy company EnBW (FWB:EBK) (Karlsruhe, Germany) has made a final investment decision to build the 112-megawatt (MW) Albatros offshore windfarm project in the German North Sea.
The project, which it acquired at the end of 2014, will be built alongside EnBW's larger Hohe See project, which was approved in December last year and has a capacity of 497 MW. Albatros will use 16 SWT-7.0-154 turbines from Siemens Wind Power, part of Siemens (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany), each rated at 7 MW and covering an area of 11 square kilometres (km). Albatros already has binding approval for connection to the grid and will be built at the same time as Hohe See, with commissioning for both expected in 2019. Both windfarms are located in the so-called "exclusive economic zone" of the North Sea, about 90 kilometres (km) north of Borkum and 100 km northwest of Helgoland. They will be capable of powering up to 710,000 homes when completed.
Hohe See, which is Germany's largest planned offshore wind project, will feature 71 of Siemens' 7-MW turbines. "This marks another milestone for the company from Karlsruhe in its strategic orientation towards renewable energies and will be its fourth offshore wind farm." the company stated.
The supply contracts for all main infrastructure work for Albatros have already been concluded, with Siemens being appointed general contractor for the turbines, foundations and, for the first time, the transformer station. GeoSea NV (Zwijndrecht, Belgium) is the subcontractor responsible for the foundations with VBMS GmbH (Wilhelmshaven, Germany) contracted for the array cabling.
EnBW is in the process of restructuring, following a few difficult financial years. Last week, the company's chief executive officer, Frank Mastiaux, announced that the company was on target for achieving its 2020 goals.
"We were confronted with extreme financial burdens in 2016 due to very low electricity prices and the heavy burden of one-off extraordinary items in the area of nuclear power," he said. "Despite these great challenges, we remain on course with our restructuring efforts. We have set ourselves the goal of at least stopping the fall in earnings in the current year--with the ambition of reaching the turning point in terms of earnings in 2017.
He explained that the restructuring is most visible with the company's aggressive shift into the wind energy sector. "We were successful against extremely strong competition in the middle of April and had our bid accepted for the 900-MW windfarm 'He Dreiht' in the North Sea. It is one of the world's first offshore wind farms that doesn't require funding and thus represents a milestone in the expansion of German offshore wind energy."
