Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The electric generation company Empresa Nacional de Electricidad SA (NYSE:EOC ) (Endesa Chile) plans to construct a 240-megawatt gas-fired plant in Quintero in Region V of Chile.

Endesa Eco, a subsidiary of Endesa Chile, is developing the first windfarm on the Central Interconnected Electricity System (SIC), a wind-sourced power generation project in the Region IV of Chile. The windfarm, to be completed by years end, will be in the Canela community, Choapa province, about 186 miles from Santiago, Chile. The $32 million project will have an installed capacity of about 18 MW and rely on wind energy to generate electricity for the SIC. With an average annual generation of approximately 47,698 MWh, the project will reduce emissions by 25,981 tons of CO2 per year. According to Endesas representatives, the company plans to invest $128.5 million in the new Quintero plant. The Quintero thermal complex, which will use two General Electric open-cycle gas turbines with 240 MW of capacity, will burn diesel until the planned LNG plant in Quintero is constructed and operational. Construction of the gas-fired plant is to begin once the project is approved by environmental regulators. It is expected to go online by the first quarter of 2009.
