Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The Mystic Power Station Project, located in Everett, Massachusetts, on a 17-acre site, is an expansion of the existing 1,085-megawatt Mystic Power Station. The new plant, which will be called Mystic 8 & 9 Generating Station, is a combined-cycle electric power plant. It will be across the street from the existing plant.
Units 8 & 9 each consist of two 245-megawatt (MW) MHI W501G (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) combustion turbine generators, paired with heat recovery steam generators, and a 260-megawatt Westinghouse steam turbine generator. Unit 8 came online in the middle of January, and Unit 9 is scheduled for operation in April 2003. The total capacity of the new plant is approximately 1,500- megawatt.
The new plant will be fired by natural gas, which will be delivered to the plant through a 20-inch diameter pipeline that will travel about 3,000 feet from the nearby Distrigas liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal. The new plant will connect to the electric grid by the adjacent Boston Edison Company (BECO) switchyard. It is also designed to meet the best control technology standards, with the use of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), to make sure that air emissions are kept to a minimum level. The City of Everett will provide minimal water needs for the new plant; wastewater will be processed at the existing wastewater treatment system and discharged to the Mystic River.
Turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services are provided by Washington Group International (Boise, Idaho). The company was formed in July 2000, by Morrison Knudsen Corporation's acquisition of Raytheon Engineers & Constructors.
Exelon Generation Company LLC (Kenneth Square, Pennsylvania), a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation (NYSE: EXC) (Chicago, Illinois), had acquired a number of plants from Sithe New England Holdings LLC in November 2002, the construction of Mystic 8 & 9 and the old Mystic plant included. Exelon Generation is one of the largest competitive electric generation companies in the U.S. See related article Exelon Expects Summer Operation at Fore River Generating Station
