First Coal Bed Methane Power Plant in Jiangxi Put into Operation

The first coal bed methane power plant in central China’s Jiangxi Province was put into officially operation in Fengcheng on May 29, 2007, after nearly two months of trial operation. This is another pioneering action in Jiangxi after the successfully utilization of coal bed methane. According to the calculation of Fengcheng Mining Bureau (Jiangxi, China), the utilization rate of coal bed methane in the bureau after the commissioning of the power plant has achieved 70%, which is two times the national average.

Coal bed methane is directly related to the safety in coal mining. Fengcheng Mining Bureau is devoted to the comprehensive utilization of coal bed methane and in recent years started planning a coal bed methane power plant. Construction for the $8.4 million coal bed methane power plant officially started in June 2006. The project is listed in the eleventh five-year plan as a demonstration project for circulation economy.

Through nearly ten months of construction, the 6 MW coal bed methane power plant was put into trial operation on April 1, 2007. Daily power output of the plant has reached 144,000 kWh with the consumption of 144,000 cubic meters of coal bed methane and a density above 30% since the trial operation. So far, 3.5 million kWh of power has been generated. Coal bed methane power is not only good for the safety production of coal mining, with a magnificent economic benefit, but also good for the environment. Annual power of the plant’s 15 units could reach 40 million kWh, and reduce the emission of coal bed methane of about 40 million cubic meters with $520,000 of economic income.
