Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--FirstEnergy Corporation (NYSE:FE) (Akron, Ohio) is in the process of installing $1.8 billion of post-combustion emissions-reduction equipment to reduce SO2 and NOx emissions from seven coal-fired boilers at the W.H. Sammis Power Station in Stratton, Ohio. The station has four Foster Wheeler (NASDAQ:FWLT) (Clinton, New Jersey) front-fired boilers, each of which is coupled with a General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) 185-megawatt (MW) steam turbine/generator, and three Babcock & Wilcox (Lynchburg, Virginia) opposed-fired boilers with one 318-MW and two 623-MW Siemens Westinghouse steam turbine/generators.

FirstEnergy selected the Frederick, Maryland, office of Bechtel Group Incorporated (San Francisco, California) for the engineering and construction of the project. The majority of the major equipment is being supplied by Babcock & Wilcox. To reduce NOx emissions, the five smallest units will use a selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) unit that reduces NOx emissions by about 30%. Units 6 and 7 will use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) units that will reduce emissions by approximately by 90%. Three flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) absorber reactor vessels are being installed to reduce SO2 emissions by 95% for all seven units. The FGDs, SCRs and SNCRs will be tied to a single 850-foot chimney with three flues. The waste from the scrubbers will be converted to gypsum that will be put on a closed conveyor system that will transport it three miles to a multi-cell landfill. The project's engineering commenced in 2005 and construction started in 2006. Unit tie-ins are expected to be complete by the end of 2010 or early 2011.
