Florida Municipal Power Agency Begins $479 Million Expansion at Cane Island Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) (Orlando, Florida) has begun construction of a $479 million, 300-megawatt (MW) expansion project at the Cane Island Power Station in Intercession City, Florida.

Construction began this month, and the project is scheduled to be ready for full commercial operation by summer 2011. The project will consist of constructing one combined-cycle power island capable of producing 300 MW for FMPA customers. The expansion will feature one 170-MW dual-fuel GE Energy MS7001FA combustion turbine, a reheating duct-fired Vogt Power International heat recovery steam generator and a 130-MW D11 model steam turbine generator, also manufactured by GE Energy, a division of General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut). State-of-the-art emission-reduction technology will also be utilized at the new energy center, including selective catalytic reduction to reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions and catalytic oxidation to control carbon-dioxide emissions.

The existing Cane Island facility is jointly owned by FMPA (50%) and the Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) (Kissimmee, Florida) (50%); however, the project will be owned by FMPA, and KUA will only act as the operator.

Zachry Construction Corporation (San Antonio, Texas) will provide turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services throughout the project.
