Florida Utility Plans $20 Million Coal/Gas Fired Boiler Upgrade

Lakeland Department of Electric & Water Utilities (LDEW) (Lakeland, Florida) an Investor Owned Utility (IOU) is planning a major boiler upgrade at their C D McIntosh generation station located in Lakeland, Florida (Plant 1516649; PEC 05002344).
Construction is planned to start in February 2004 and will last an estimated 84 days. This estimated $20 million project will require the installation of 25,000 condenser tubes, a major overhaul to the 365 megawatt (MW) steam turbine generator. Other upgrades and installations will include a new superheater, boiler inspections, scrubber cleaning and repairs, and replacement of air heater basket. Sixteen new low NOx (nitrogen oxide) burners will be installed to achieve a reduction in NOx emissions.
LDEW is currently soliciting bid documents for subcontractors through the end of September. Completion of this project is planned for April 2004. The C D McIntosh power station 364 MW Turbine Generator is powered by a Coal/Gas B&W Front-fired boiler (2.51MM lbs/hr, 2640psi@1005F).
Since starting up in 1904, Lakeland Electric, Florida's third-largest public power utility, provides electricity to more than 100,000 customers with power generation from their two main power plants the 941MW CD McIntosh power plant and the 176MW Larsen power plant.
