Fluor Completes First of Two 800-Megawatt Units at Oak Grove Power Station in Texas

Fluor Corporation has completed the 800-megawatt Unit 1 and all common facilities for the two-unit complex at Oak Grove Management LLC's new supercritical Oak Grove Power Station.

Released Friday, January 08, 2010

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) has completed the 800-megawatt (MW) Unit 1 and all common facilities for the two-unit complex at Oak Grove Management LLC's new supercritical Oak Grove Power Station, which is near Franklin in Robertson County, Texas. The units are now online, after beginning operations at the end of December 2009. Oak Grove Management LLC is a subsidiary of Luminant Energy Company LLC, which itself is a subsidiary of Energy Future Holdings Corporation (Dallas, Texas).

Oak Grove 01, an Alstom boiler, passed the required performance and emissions compliance tests. Oak Grove 02, a Babcock & Wilcox (Barberton, Ohio) supercritical pulverized-lignite-fired boiler, is scheduled for completion in mid-2010. Each unit powers a General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut), steam turbine generator set. The cost for the entire construction will be about $2 billion. Babcock & Wilcox is a subsidiary of McDermott International Incorporated (NYSE:MDR) (Houston, Texas).

Upon completion, Oak Grove units 01 and 02 will have lower emission rates than any existing lignite plant in the state, and at least 70% lower than the national coal plant average. The environmental control equipment that will reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions will consist of low NOx burners, overfired-air and selective catalytic reduction units. Sulfur dioxide will be reduced by wet flue gas desulfurization scrubbers. Baghouses with fabric filters will aid in the reduction of Particulate Matter. Oak Grove is the nation's first lignite-fueled, pulverized coal station to utilize new Activated Carbon Sorbent Injection technology to remove mercury emissions.
