Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Egyptian nuclear power program was launched in the 1960s with the construction of the Inshas Nuclear Research Center in eastern Egypt. The program was affected by many regional crises, such as war from 1967 to 1973, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, and now the Japanese nuclear reactor explosion.
Based on recent events in Japan, Egyptians are questioning the safety of nuclear energy, even as specialists and nuclear field engineers make a decision regarding the technology that will be used in an upcoming nuclear project, the tender for which will be floated in the next few months.
The Fukushima nuclear reactor explosion has caused program managers to lean toward pressurized water reactor technology rather than boiling water reactor technology for the project. However, the recommendations from nuclear experts favor boiling water reactor technology.
Egypt has a nuclear program plan to construct four 1,000-megawatt nuclear power plants through 2025. The facilities will be located in the area of El-Dabaa on the Mediterranean coast near Alexandria.
Egypt has an independent nuclear safety authority responsible for public and private nuclear power plants, selecting sites for the plants, monitoring construction and operation.
At the end of 2009, WorleyParsons Limited (ASX:WOR) was chosen to act as consultant for Egypt's first nuclear power plant under a 10-year, $270 million contract. According to the contract, the consultant will be responsible for training workers in nuclear safety issues, the use of safety codes and the monitoring of nuclear power plants.
