GE, ABB, and Alstom All Score in Hydropower Contracts in China

GE has been awarded the $78 million main contract for the supply of four 250 MW pump turbines and motor-generation sets, auxiliaries, and services to the project.

Released Friday, March 26, 2004

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). GE (NYSE: GE) ( Atlanta, Georgia) and ABB (NYSE: ABB) (Zurich, Switzerland) have been contracted to deliver power station turbines and systems for a 1,000 MW pumped storage hydro power station in the suburbs of Yixing City in the eastern province of Nanjing.

GE has been awarded the $78 million main contract for the supply of four 250 MW pump turbines and motor-generation sets, auxiliaries, and services to the project. For its $22 million part of the GE consortium led project, ABB will deliver a computer supervisory control system, protection and excitation systems, static frequency converters, generator circuit breakers, station service systems and cabling. The main contract was awarded to GE by the Jiangsu Pumped Storage Power Company.

The pump turbines will be vertical shaft, single stage, reversible Francis machines rated at 255-275 MW. The 50 Hz motor-generators will be three phase, air-cooled, vertical shaft, suspension type, reversible synchronous units. The generator mode will have a rating of 278 MVA while the motor mode will be rated at 275 MW.

The GE equipment will be built in Norway, Finland, and Canada. The site installation will begin in the second half of 2005, with the first unit scheduled to enter commercial operation at the end of August 2007. The other units will come into operation in following intervals of five, four, and three months respectively. Work on the project, which will strengthen power supply in an area that suffers from severe power shortages due to growing demand, will start immediately.

"GE is very pleased to be participating in this key project," said Jeff Wiener, Director of Hydro Sales for GE Energy. "This new 1,000 MW facility is vital to help the growing need for stable and reliable power in the Jiangsu province. We believe GE's considerable expertise with pump storage units was an important factor in being chosen for this project."

Another two hydropower project equipment contracts in China have been awarded to Alstom (NYSE:ALS) (Paris, France). The company will supply three generators to the Goupitan hydropower station that has a total installed capacity of 3,000 MW. The second order is for the supply of a 125 MW turbine for the extension of the Dongfeng hydropower station. Both power plants are in the southwestern Guizhou province and are sited upstream on the Wujiang River near Qingzhen City. The total value of Alstom's contracts is $36.8 million.

Tianjin Alstom Hydro Co will handle both projects with delivery of equipment for Goupitan scheduled for 2009 and 2010 and for Dongfeng in 2005.
