General Contractor DPR Reviews Final Bid Packages for U.S. Pharmacopeia’s $72 Million Headquarters Lab Project In Maryland

One of the new structures will feature 141,000 square feet of research laboratory and office space.

Released Monday, August 22, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). United States Pharmacopeia (USP) (Rockville, Maryland) gathered a stellar team for the construction of a new headquarters and research campus on Twin Parkway in Rockville. Kling (Washington, D.C.) was tapped for the initial architectural assessment and Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum (St. Louis, Missouri) went on to develop the final site plans for the $72 million 2-building project, which will total 157,000 square feet of laboratories, meeting space, and demonstrative offices. USP selected DPR (Fairfax, Virginia) as the general contractor for the project, with responsibilities for all aspects of construction, including subcontractor selection and on-site management.

While DPR is in the process of reviewing and selecting the few remaining bid packages, work at the site has already begun. To make way for construction, two existing buildings, known as Twinbrook I and Twinbrook II, had to be demolished. One of the new structures will feature 141,000 square feet of research laboratory and office space. The second building will contain approximately 16,000 square feet of additional offices, meeting space, and support services.

The project is located on a nearly 3-acre site directly behind USP’s current 67,000 square foot headquarters building. The company currently leases an additional 50,000 square feet of space at another location. When construction is complete in late 2006, USP will have a total of over 225,000 square feet of space at the Twinbrook site, allowing them to consolidate all of their operations under one roof.

Founded in 1820, USP is the official public standards-setting authority for all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, dietary supplements, and other healthcare products manufactured and sold in the United States. Functions of this nonprofit, nongovernmental organization include ensuring the quality and consistency of medicines and verifying the ingredients in dietary supplements.
