Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Inc.; Houston, Texas) General Mills Incorporated (NYSE: GIS) has permanently closed its beverage products plant in Carlisle, Pennsylvania as of August 2001. The 125,000 square foot plant produced Squeezit beverages targeted mainly at the children's market and employed about 116 people.
Product sales have dropped off over the years and because the soft box and pouch products now mainly dominate the children's' markets. The Squeezit line has not been growing and General Mills decided to drop the product because of unsatisfactory sales figures.
The plant originally opened in 1988 along Ritner Highway in an industrial park and most of the employees will loose their jobs while some managers and highly skilled employees will be offered jobs at other General Mills facilities. Squeezit was the only product produced at the plant, which was and the only location where the product was made. The company is expected to sell the property, building and equipment.
General Mills recorded more than $7.5 billion in annual sales in 2000 with products like breakfast cereals, Gold Medal flour, Betty Crocker desert and snack products, Nature Valley snacks and Yoplait and Colombo yogurts.
