Generics Demand Spurs Ratiopharm's $80 Million Plant Construction Expansion in Quebec

The Ratiopharm Group (Ulm, Germany) is wrapping up an $80 million expansion of its manufacturing site in Mirabel, Quebec. Ratiopharm Canada was formed in 2000, when its parent company purchased Technilab Pharma and that company's facility in Mirabel. Ratiopharm's focus is on the development, marketing, and distribution of generic drugs.

As reported by Industrialinfo.com in June of 2002, $25 million of the project was to expand manufacturing, and the balance went for the creation of an international Research and Development Center. Genivar Construction (Montreal, Quebec) served as construction manager of the expansion, which is expected to eventually add nearly new 100 employees.

Ratiopharm currently has approximately 90 generic drugs in development, targeting a variety of conditions, including infections, asthma, and cardiovascular illness. The expanded Mirabel facility will support continued long-term growth for the company.

Ratiopharm Group is considered by many to be Europe's largest pharmaceuticals producer and among the largest in the world. Founded in Germany in 1977, the Group has subsidiaries and representatives in 23 countries worldwide, and employs more than 2000 people, currently 400 in Canada.
