Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - One of Germany's leading energy companies Steag AG (Essen, Germany) has moved forward with its largest wind project with the order of 36 wind turbines from Danish manufacturer, Vestas Wind Systems (OTC:VWDRY) (Randers, Denmark).

Crucea North is a 108-megawatt (MW) onshore windfarm in Romania, located in the in province of Dobrogea, around 50-kilometers (km) to the north of the Black Sea harbour town of Constanta. The V112.3.0 MW wind turbines are rated at 3 MW each and will produce an estimated 300-gigawatt hours (GWh) per year. This will help offset the equivalent of 124,000 tons of CO2 emissions and provide enough electricity to cover the residential electricity consumption of more than 550,000 people, Vestas maintained.

The project marks a deliberate shift into more renewable energy by the German utility, which has a total installed capacity of around 9,400 MW worldwide, including around 7,700 MW in Germany. Steag, which employs approximately 6,000 people, operates mainly coal-fired plants.

In related news, Steag recently announced the purchase of 18 wind turbines with a total capacity of 43.2 MW for an onshore windfarm in the rural district of Dahme-Spreewald in Brandenburg, Germany. These projects are part of a company drive to increase the proportion of renewables in the energy mix to 25% in the coming years.

"STEAG's extensive experience in development, financing and implementation of major international projects is a decisive success factor," claimed Joachim Rumstadt, Chairman of the Board of Management of Steag. "With this venture, STEAG is emphasizing its strategic alignment on the way to becoming a well positioned power generation business in the field of renewables too."

Thomas Richterich, President of Vestas Central Europe, commented: "This wind energy project marks another important milestone in further developing the Romanian wind market. With this order Vestas reinforces its market leading position in the Romanian market having the strongest local presence and the largest operational fleet."

Vestas will supply, install and commission the turbines, as well as provide a 10-year full-scope service agreement. Delivery is planned to start in April 2014 and commissioning is expected to be completed by December 2014.
