Germany's Vohburg Refinery to Begin Maintenance Turnaround in March

Bayernoil Raffineriegesellschaft mbH is planning to perform a 22-day shutdown beginning on March 1 at the 120,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Bayernoil Vohburg Refinery in Germany.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Bayernoil Raffineriegesellschaft mbH is planning to perform a 22-day shutdown beginning on March 1 at the 120,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Bayernoil Vohburg Refinery in Germany. The maintenance turnaround will involve a change of catalysts, and minor repairs will be made on the 18,000-BBL/d fluid catalytic cracking unit, the 30,000-BBL/d Naphtha Desulfurization 1, the 16,000-BBL/d Reformer 1, the 1,400-BBL/d mid-distillate unit and a new selective hydrogenation unit. The remaining processing units will be kept online. The last overhaul at Vohburg site took place in the third quarter of 2003.

Bayernoil Raffineriegesellschaft operates two independent sites: Vohburg and Neustadt. The latter plant performed its last overhaul in 2008 as part of the $381.8 million ISAR project, which was implemented to optimize the refinery's facilities in the area and to increase the profitability of the Vorhburg and Neustadt refineries. One of the goals of the ISAR project was to design and build three units at the 120,000-BBL/d Neustadt site: a new 48,000-BBL/d hydrocracker, a new steam methane reformer for the production of hydrogen and a 160-ton-per-day Claus unit. The plant underwent a 26-day maintenance overhaul from April 14 to May 9, 2008, and all of the remaining processing units were revamped. Uhde GmbH (Dortmund, Germany) handled the design and construction of the hydrocracker, which began processing on December 24, 2008. The Jacobs Engineering Group (NYSE:JEC) (Pasadena, California) was in charge of the Claus unit, which started operation in September 2008, and UOP, a Honeywell (NYSE:HON) (Morris Town, New Jersey) company, designed and built the steam methane reformer, which began processing in August 2008. The Neustadt Bayernoil Refinery is scheduled to undergo its next turnaround in the third quarter of 2011 for general maintenance work.
