Other regions of high industrial plant concentration include both the Southeast and Southwest regions, which are each home to about 14% of the U.S. plant population.

Industrial Manufacturing Industry leads all industries in plant population with more than 8,600 plants, or about 27% of the total. This broad industry covers a spectrum of heavy manufacturing sectors, including automobile, semiconductor, and electronics manufacturing, as well as other key growth sectors like shipping ports/terminals and mass transit/light rail operations.

After the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, the second largest industry in the U.S., in regard to the number of operational plants, is the Food & Beverage Industry, which has more than 6,000 major plants, or about 19% of the total.

The third and fourth largest industries in the U.S. are the Metals & Minerals and the Chemical Processing industries, respectively. Each of these industries command about 12% of the total.
