GUSC Energy Gets Go-Ahead for Biomass CHP in Upstate New York

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--GUSC Energy, a subsidiary of Griffiss Utility Services Corporation (Rome, New York), has received the go-ahead to construct a new biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant in hangar building No. 100 at the former Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York.

About six months ago, the project was on life support until Oneida County approved a plan for a gas pipeline that could one day be linked to the hangar. Now, the $18 million plant is scheduled to begin installation around mid-2012.

Plans call for the installation of two 85 million-Btu-per-hour gasifiers and two heat-recovery steam generators that will process 140,000 tons per day of woody biomass material and will generate 1.1 megawatts of electricity and 40,000 pounds of steam per hour for heating buildings at the technology park.

The company selected Bette & Cring Construction Group (Latham, New York) as the primary contractor for the project and is in the process of completing bid packages for all trades associated with the project.

Construction is expected to be in full swing by August 2012 and fully operational by November 2013.
