H J Heinz New Frozen-Meal Facility in Florence Nears Completion

Heinz Company (NYSE:HNZ) (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) has begun commissioning its new frozen-food manufacturing facility on a 49-acre site in the Pee Dee Touchstone Energy Commerce City, a class-A commercial and industrial park in Florence, South Carolina. When completed next month, the new facility is expected to create 350 jobs over the next five years.

Construction begun in the summer 2008 on the $105 million project and involved the construction of a 250,000-square-foot state-of-the-art processing, packaging and distribution facility. The new plant will produce Weight Watchers Smart Ones and Boston Market frozen entrees to meet increasing demand of frozen meals. Building, design and construction services were awarded to Stellar (Jacksonville, Florida). Sharpe Engineering (Amherst, Wisconsin) was retained for equipment installation and Bassett Mechanical Contractors & Engineers (Kaukauna, Wisconsin) was responsible for the refrigeration package. Faith Technologies Incorporated (Menasha, Wisconsin) was awarded the electrical package.
